Have you been in search for your perfect bakery/dim sum place in Boston? So have we! We’ve been to many dim sum restaurants in the area and I’ve got to say, Great Taste Bakery & Restaurant might be the one. Great Taste Bakery & Restaurant is located right in the midst of Chinatown in Boston. It is a fairly small restaurant with no more than ten tables, so if you come at a busy time they might be packed and you’ll have to wait. Once you get a seat, one of the waiters will ask you if you want tea as well as hand you an extensive paper menu full of unique dim sum dishes. Great Taste doesn’t serve dim sum in those pushy carts so you have to check out what you want from the menu which usually takes longer for you to get the food but fresh dim sum is guaranteed the best dim sum. So let’s jump right into the food.
The dim sum here is absolutely amazing. Every dish that we got came out nice and hot. The time it took for the dishes to come out was fairly quick and almost all at once. The portion of food you get from each dish is decently generous as well. Let’s dive right in to the dishes we got.
Steamed Shrimp Noodle Rolls- Every time I go somewhere to eat dim sum, I always get one of these noodle roll dishes whether it be with shrimp or beef. Great Taste adds two things of steamed Chinese broccoli to both sides of the shrimp noodle rolls which not many other dim sum places do. That is a great addition because I love Chinese broccoli and the soy sauce that comes with the noodles rolls just make it so much better. The shrimp noodle rolls just tasted like they always do. Amazing! You could tell the shrimp on the inside was very fresh. The rice roll itself was also freshly made. You can tell by looking to see if it’s slightly transparent so that it reveals the shrimp. When it is then you know that it’s fresh.
Ribs with Taro- For all the new dim sum eaters, this is the dish to get. Forget all the other dishes and just remember this one. It’s the best. It’s the bomb. You won’t regret it. For all the people who know what I’m talking about, then you know how good this is. Great Taste also does a great job with this dish. Some dim sum restaurants that I’ve been to the pork was ok/good but the restaurant couldn’t get the taro right. Their taro comes out either too dry or too mushy. Great Taste does an excellent job with both the pork and taro.
Chicken Feet- Great Taste serves their chicken feet just like the other restaurants. It comes in this black bean sauce which makes it taste great. It is very juicy with flavor and just overall something you can munch on while you talk to your friends or family.
Fried Dough Noodle Rolls- I had never tried fried dough noodle rolls prior to Great Taste. It was this long stick of fried dough wrapped around a big, white noodle roll. They flavored it with some sweet soy sauce and boy was it good. It was soft out the outside and nice and crunchy on the inside. You should probably get this when you eat in and not get it when you get it to take-out because it might not be crispy by the time you get to it if you do get it for take-out.
Preserved Egg with Pork Congee- Great Taste hit us up with a very generous amount of congee and it was delicious. It was a little bland on one side but a little less flavor means better health in the long run! The pork was very tender and soft. I didn’t really like the ginger that they put in because who likes ginger? Am I right? I forgot to tell them not to put in any ginger but I guess ginger is good for your health so you might as well eat it.
Great Taste lacks in their service for their customers. The waiters/waitresses really ought to learn how to be more respectful to their customers. Our waitress kept speaking to us in Chinese even though we were speaking to her in English. Just because we are Asian and look Asian means that we know how to speak Chinese. We didn’t really understand what she was saying so we just went with the flow and ordered based of the menu. The waitress never checked up on us once after she gave us our food. Our wait for a table was around five minutes which isn’t bad but it was unnecessary as there were tables that were empty and clean. The waiters/waitress just stood in the back. It got to a point where we didn’t know if we were just supposed to sit ourselves down at a table.
The price at Great Taste is very cheap. Most of the dim sum dishes didn’t go over $5 and they came with a very generous quantity. The congees were a very good deal because they came in a large bowl that could easily fill you up. You can choose a small for a cheaper price if you want to try other dishes.
